Western Canada Math Biology Spring Workshop 2022

  • Start Date: 05/13/2022
  • End Date: 05/15/2022

University of British Columbia, Okanagan

This workshop, which is aimed chiefly at graduate students, will bring together students, postdocs and faculty in mathematical biology in Western Canada. Invited speaker Dr. Jimmy Garnier will be giving an extended lecture on his work in eco-evolutionary dynamics, an active area of research that seeks to understand the interaction between ecology and evolution when the two occur on similar time scales. Dr. Raibatak Das, formerly a postdoc in mathematical biology at UBC Vancouver, will discuss his experience transitioning from academia to industry, and what it's like to work as a mathematical modeler in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Rebecca Tyson will discuss a recent study of the impact of ecological modelling on ecosystems management decisions, comparing past successes and giving perspectives on the factors that lead to impactful research. Dr. Thomas Hillen will discuss modern ways of disseminating science: the publication process, how to choose a journal, open access, blogs and social media. Drs. Eric Foxall and Jay Newby will discuss their experience with the interview process for research faculty and in particular the interviewee’s research seminar or “job talk”. There will also be a poster session giving students the opportunity to share their work and grow their network of peers and collaborators.
