Institutes Exchange Program

PIMS Simons

The PIMS Institutes Exchange Program aims to reduce the carbon footprint of travel for research purposes by maximizing the scientific impact of each visit. Inspired by the Simons Oberwolfach Visiting Professor Program, PIMS Institutes Exchange Program builds agreements between partner American, Indian and French Mathematical Institutes, allowing scholars to extend existing visits to include nearby universities or institutes, facilitating additional scientific collaboration.

Researchers travelling between PIMS and one of the following partner institutes, for a scientific event (conference, workshop, etc.), may be eligible for funding to extend their visit to include nearby universities or institutes.

Additionally, researchers participating in the semester programs at either of the following institutes may be eligible to visit PIMS through this program

Application Process

Participants can apply via filling out the application form (which requires a CV, a statement of the purpose of the visit, and a letter of invitation). Please submit these materials by July 15 for full consideration for support in the period September 1-March 31, and by January 15, for full consideration for support in the period April 1-August 31. Later applications may be considered on a rolling basis depending on availability of funds.

ICERM

The Institute for Computational and Experimental Mathematics (ICERM) was founded in 2010 by Brown University Professors Jill Pipher, Jeffrey Brock, Jan Heshaven, Jeffrey Hoffstein and Bjorn Sandstede, through a major grant to Brown University from the National Science Foundation, Division of Mathematical Sciences.

Eligible participants visiting ICERM (in person) for any program may add a side trip to a nearby institution, before or after their stay at ICERM. \$250 is available per visit to universities in the Acela corridor. ICERM is located in the middle of Brown University's Providence, Rhode Island Campus.

ICTS

The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bengaluru, India was established in 2007 and is a multi and interdisciplinary centre for the Theoretical Sciences. ICTS supports researchers and runs programs throughout the sciences tackling some of the most challenging problems posed by nature.

Up to \$500 (CAD) (per visit) is available to support PIMS visitors to ICTS who visit nearby institutions, or to ICTS-related (ICTS, TIFR, ISI, IMSc) visitors who visit PIMS Institutions. ICTS is located in Bengaluru, India

CIRM

The Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM) is one of the largest mathematics conference centers in the world. At full capacity, CIRM welcomes about 100 participants from all over the world every week. CIRM events cover the whole spectrum of mathematics and its interactions.

Awards of up to \$1000 (CAD) are available to support PIMS Visitors to CIRM who visit other institutions in France for the purpose of collaboration. The program is limited to 4 visitors per year. CIRM is located in Marseilles

IHP

The Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP) is an international research centre for mathematics and theoretical physics founded by Émile Borel. It is part of the Sorbonne University and is operated in association with the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).

Up to $500 (CAD) per visit is available to support PIMS Visitors to IHP who visit other institutions in France. IHP is It is located in central Paris, in the 5th arrondissement, on the Sainte-Geneviève Hill.

IMSI

The Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI) is mathematical science research institute funded by the National Science Foundation. It is managed by the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Up to 2 visitors per direction, per year may be eligible for up to \$1000 (CAD) for visits to nearby institutions. IMSI is hosted at the University of Chicago

PIMS <-> SLMath & IPAM

Researchers participating at any of the semester programs at one of the following institutes may be eligible for funding to visit PIMS institutions. Please see each individual section for details.

SLMath

The Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (formerly MSRI) was founded in 1982, dedicated to the advancement and communication of fundamental knowledge in mathematics and the mathematical sciences.

Up to \$250 (CAD) per visit is available for SLMath members visiting PIMS institutions, this may be combined with the \$250 (USD) already available from MSRI for visiting academic sponsor institutions. MSRI is located near the University of California - Berkeley.

IPAM

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics is a mathematics institute that fosters the interaction of mathematics with a broad range of science and technology, builds new interdisciplinary research communities, promotes mathematical innovation, and engages and transforms the world through mathematics. Over 2000 visitors per year attend its workshops, long programs, student research programs, summer schools and other programs.

Up to \$250 (CAD) per visit is available for IPAM members who visit a PIMS institution during the term of their membership. (Please note, for visits falling within an IPAM long program, only short visits (2-3 days) will be considered). IPAM is located on the campus of the University of California - Los Angeles.

PIMS <-> BIRS

PIMS-BIRS-Simons Travel Award

The PIMS-BIRS-Simons Travel Award aims help researchers attending one of the BIRS 5-day (or longer) workshops, to maximize the scientific impact of their travel by visiting researchers at one of the PIMS member institutions. Up to $1000 (CAD) is available to support extending your stay at one of the PIMS sites. All reasonable travel and accommodation expenses will be considered, but must be related to extending your stay at the PIMS site, and will be subject to the usual PIMS reimbursement policies. Please contact programs@pims.math.ca to confirm eligible expenses. To apply for this program, please complete the PIMS-BIRS-Simons Application Form.
