Topic
Tight closure operations in characteristic zero

Details
Abstract: Tight closure was introduced by Hochster and Huneke in 1986 and has been a highly effective tool for solving problems in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. It is also closely connected with the study of singularities defined via the Frobenius in positive characteristic. In this talk, I’ll give an introduction to tight closure (and closure operations in general) as well as its connection to the study of singularities in positive characteristic. Then, I’ll discuss work developing an analogous theory of closure operations in characteristic zero that is closely connected with the study of singularities. This is joint work with Neil Epstein, Rebecca R.G., and Karl Schwede.
