UBC Math Department Colloquium: Nahid Walji

In this talk, I will describe three projects designed to support students’ development as mathematical thinkers, with a focus on their engagement with mathematics. First, I will discuss the co-creation of ‘Student Perspective’ course materials for Math 220 (Mathematical Proof) that address common misunderstandings and cultivate intuition. Second, I will outline the creation of a summer program that emphasizes collaboration, communication, and creativity at an early stage in students’ mathematical development. Finally, I will share approaches to welcoming non-STEM students into mathematics, to change apprehension into curiosity, engagement, and even excitement.
