Optimization research mathematically examines the question of how to determine the minimum or maximum value of a problem. The real-life applications of optimization are numerous and surprisingly diverse. For example, minimizing the cost of constructing a new road, minimizing damaged cells during radiotherapy cancer treatments, and minimizing noise during image reconstruction, are all approached through modern optimization techniques. Research into optimization opens new understanding into variational analysis, new techniques for solving optimization problems, and novel applications of optimization in the real world.
The WCOM seeks to bring together faculty and students from the Pacic North West (including most PIMS sites) and optimization practitioners to discuss their recent results and research. It provides an excellent forum for students and faculty to meet and network towards future research collaborations.
