John Baez

John Carlos Baez is an American mathematical physicist and a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Riverside. He has worked on spin foams in loop quantum gravity, applications of higher categories to physics, and applied category theory. He also uses category theory to study networks and help researchers use them in scientific software, such as quickly adaptable models of infectious disease. Prof. Baez is also working on categorified ring theory, which sheds new light on topics such as Schur functors, plethysm, and the splitting principle. Prof. Baez runs a mathematical blog, Azimuth, and a column in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
