PIMS Education Call for Proposals 2023

  • Date: 11/15/2022

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) welcomes applications for support of education activities in the mathematical sciences to occur after April 3, 2023. The deadline for submission is February 28th, 2023. We will be awarding grants from $500 up to $5000. Proposals will be reviewed by the PIMS Education Review Panel in early March, with awards announced on March 15th.

Where appropriate, cost sharing is encouraged and may enhance the probability of success. Applications which include aspects of computational thinking may also be eligible for review as part of the Callysto Program. If you would like your application to be considered for additional funding through Callysto, please indicate so in your application and include details of the computational or data-science components of your project. These applications will be reviewed for eligibility by Callysto and may be awarded additional funding on the same schedule.

Types of activities supported:

PIMS believes that training the next generation of mathematical scientists and promoting diversity within mathematics cannot begin too early. We welcome proposals aimed at creating opportunities for K-12 students to learn (Math Fairs, Math Mania, Summer Camps, Problem Solving Workshops, Hackathons), for K-12 teachers to improve their knowledge of mathematics, statistics and computer science and their capacity to teach (Teacher training workshops). PIMS welcomes proposals that address historical challenges faced by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. We encourage submissions with new ideas!

Submission Procedure:

Proposals must be submitted to: education@pims.math.ca

The proposal should include the following information:

  1. Title of proposal.
  2. Organizer(s), including affiliation(s).
  3. Proposed location and dates.
  4. Summary of educational objectives.
  5. Intended participants.
  6. General comments.
  7. Itemized budget.
  8. Amount of funding requested from PIMS.
  9. Other sources of funding and cost-sharing support.

If you would also like your application to be considered for support through the Callysto Program, please review and address the Callysto assessment criteria as well.

Criteria used for evaluation include:

  • Innovative ideas and impact.
  • Mathematical content.
  • Feasibility-impact is commensurate with funding amount requested; defined organization team in place; budget appropriateness and clarity; availability of matching funds.
  • Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity– designed to ensure a diverse pool of potential participants.

Equity statement

Equity, diversity and inclusion are essential to academic excellence in the mathematical sciences. In addition to merit, proposals will be considered on the basis of how well they promote equity, diversity and inclusion. We support an open and diverse community, which includes voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. PIMS envisions a climate in which all participants are provided with the best possible conditions for learning and research. We strive to provide a supportive and safe environment that is dedicated to excellence, equity and mutual respect.
