PIMS is an Unité Mixte Internationale of the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), an honour shared by only three other international research centres. PIMS is engaged in a long-term research programme on sustainable development with European research centres, such the Humboldt University in Berlin and the École Polytechnique and the Centre De Recherche en Mathématiques de la Décision (CEREMADE), both in Paris. PIMS has a cooperation agreement with the Centro de Modelamiento Matemático (CMM) at the University of Chile, and separate working agreements with two Mexican institutes, the Mathematics Institute at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM), and the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CINVESTAV).
PIMS has assembled the major mathematics research centres around the Pacific Rim in a single network: the Pacific Rim Mathematical Association (PRIMA) which now has 51 members in Canada, the United States, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, China and Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and Singapore. PRIMA is a natural conduit for bringing international students and researchers to Canada and for accessing foreign expertise.
