Andy Liu from University of Alberta Awarded 2010 PIMS Education Prize

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2010 PIMS Education Prize is Prof. Andy Liu from the University of Alberta. This prize is intended to recognize individuals from the PIMS universities, or other educational institutions in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan who have played a major role in encouraging activities which have enhanced public awareness and appreciation of mathematics, as well as fostering communication among various groups and organizations concerned with mathematical training at all levels.

Daniel Coombs from UBC Awarded 2010 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) are pleased to announce that Prof. Daniel Coombs of the University of British Columbia has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics.

PIMS awarded $1.2 million by Alberta Government

The Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology has awarded $1.2 million in support of PIMS programs in Alberta for the period 2010-2013. These funds will support a variety of activities including postdoctoral positions, graduate fellowships in mathematical biology, industrial short courses and summer schools, as well as multiple scientific, educational and outreach events.

Call for Nominations for the 2010 PIMS Education Prize

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences is now accepting nominations for the 2010 PIMS Education Prize. The prize is $1,000.

The prize will be awarded to a member of the PIMS community who has made a significant contribution to education in the mathematical sciences. This prize is intended to recognize individuals from the PIMS universities, or other educational institutions in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan who have played a major role in encouraging activities which have enhanced public awareness and appreciation of mathematics, as well as fostering communication among various groups and organizations concerned with mathematical training at all levels.

PIMS Graduate Training Fellowships in Mathematical Biology - Call for Applications 2010-2011

The PIMS International Graduate Training Centre in Mathematical Biology invites applicants for the IGTC fellowship for 2010-2011 academic year. Fellowships are worth up at $20K a year and are for students working in mathematical biology at Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) universities (Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Regina, Saskatchewan, Simon Fraser and Victoria)

Joint Initiative of the North American Mathematics Institutes: Climate Change, Sustainability and the Mathematical Sciences

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences will be cosponsoring the Mathematical Institutes Open House reception at the 2010 Joint Meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in San Francisco on Wednesday, January 13. The event will highlight research initiatives by North American mathematical institutes regarding climate change and sustainability. PIMS Director Alejandro Adem, as well as directors from 13 other institutes will be in attendance to discuss the details of their institutes' plans and contributions on these topics.

Gordon Slade Awarded 2010 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize

The Directors of the three Institutes, CRM, Fields and PIMS, are pleased to announce that Gordon Slade from the University of British Columbia is the recipient of the 2010 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize. The award recognises his outstanding work in rigorous statistical mechanics and probability. He is renowned for developing a technique known as the lace expansion into a systematic calculus which he has applied to diverse and famous problems including self-avoiding walk, percolation, branched polymers, random graphs, and numerical techniques for the exact enumeration of self-avoiding walks.

CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics

The CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics recognizes exceptional research in any branch of applied mathematics, interpreted broadly. The nominee's research should have been conducted primarily in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian university. The prize is to be awarded to a researcher less than ten years past the date of Ph.D. at the time of nomination.
