Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences - PIMS

PIMS has always been heavily involved in education and outreach. Our programs have touched countless educators, students, and parents in Western Canada and beyond. These activities are organized by our tireless education coordinators, who form a cadre of dedicated professionals working for mathematics education in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Our activities include mathematics contests such as ELMACON, meetings for educators such as Changing the Culture, as well as our prestigious PIMS Education Prize, which is meant to recognize the best mathematical educators in Western Canada and Washington State. We also organize workshops for teachers and publish a magazine, Pi in the Sky, which is intended for high school teachers and their students. Math Mania is an outreach event which impacts students, teachers and parents through the beauty of mathematics. Our programs to enhance the mathematical opportunities of Aboriginal students have also had some remarkable successes, and we have worked with First Nations schools throughout British Columbia.

Funding for these activities comes from sources outside of our regular scientific budget, and that is where donations play a critical role.

For example, just $1000 per year will support peer mentorship that can help four to five students achieve their potential in mathematics.
