Scientific Diving

3 weeks, 25 May - 12 June - See how it went!!

The course will introduce and familiarize certified divers with the practices of scientific diving. Students will learn and implement essential skills and methods used in underwater research, including surveys using transects and quadrats, underwater size assessment, tagging and species identification. All aspects of underwater research planning, including experimental design, dive safety and budgeting, will be covered. Students will be expected to master both classroom and field skills in this course with a combination of lectures, coursework, exams and fieldwork (SCUBA diving, small boat operation and topside support). Classroom topics include marine science and applications, dive safety and theory, and scientific diving standards. Successful completion of practical field and diving components and a written exam are required to obtain Canadian Association for Underwater Science- Scientific Diver 1 Status.
