CMS-PIMS Math Camp - SFU Surrey
- Start Date: 06/25/2014
- End Date: 06/26/2014
Every year, during the last week of June, or the first week of July, SFU hosts a regional CMS-PIMS Math Camp for students from grades 8, 9 and 10. These camps are sponsored by grants from the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and from the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS). These camps, which are organized annually at several universities across Canada, are designed to provide students, who have demonstrated a talent for mathematics, with a variety of enrichment activities in a fun and rewarding environment.
The camps will be offered at two different locations: SFU Burnaby, June 23th - 27th, 2014 and SFU Surrey, June 25th - 26th, 2014. Note that both camps are day camps. Students are responsible for their transportation to and from the camp each day.
Presentations are designed to offer insights into higher level mathematics and to make it relevant to the participants. Most of the presentations have a hands-on component to offer experiences with mathematics drawn from a variety of backgrounds. Participants will have fun trying out their problem solving and critical thinking skills, will gain a better understanding of mathematical structures, and be intrigued by the beauty that mathematics offers. Presenters and helpers are drawn from faculty, visiting faculty, postdoctoral students, graduate students and undergraduate students of the Department of Mathematics and afiliated organizations. Please check out Past Camps for a listing of presentations and workshops held in the previous years as well as a group picture of participants.
Support from Simon Fraser University (SFU), the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS), and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) will enable us to cover the majority of the food, events and other costs. However, a registration fee of $50.00 for Burnaby Camp or $20 for Surrey Camp will be necessary to offset some of the costs.
Participation in the SFU Math Camps is by invitation only. High school teachers who have promising students who are eager to participate, should fill out a Nomination Form and fax it back as soon as possible. The application should be received no later than Friday, May 23, 2014. Camp participants will be selected from the nominations received and the successful applicants will be informed through their teacher.
