SFU Math Camps
- Start Date: 07/03/2007
- End Date: 07/06/2007
Every year, during the last week of June, we are hosting regional CMS Math Camps for students from grades 9 and 10. The CMS Math Camps, which are organized annually at several universities across Canada, are designed to provide students in grades 9 and 10, who have demonstrated a talent for mathematics, with a variety of enrichment activities in a fun and rewarding environment.
For the second year in a row, the camps will be offered at two different locations: SFU Burnaby, July 3rd – 6th, and SFU Surrey, July 4th – 5th, 2007. Note that both camps are day camps. Students are responsible for their transportation to and from the camp each day.
Presentations are designed to offer insights into higher level mathematics and to make it relevant to the participants. Most of the presentations have a hands-on component to offer experiences with mathematics drawn from a variety of backgrounds. Participants will have fun trying out their problem solving and critical thinking skills, will gain a better understanding of mathematical structures, and be intrigued by the beauty that mathematics offers. Presenters and helpers are drawn from faculty, visiting faculty, postdoctoral students, graduate students and undergraduate students of the Department of Mathematics and afiliated organizations. Please check out Past Camps for a listing of presentations and workshops held in the previous years as well as a group picture of participants.
Support from the Simon Fraser University (SFU), the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS), and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) will enable us to cover the majority of the food, events and other costs. However, a registration fee of $50.00 for Burnaby Camp or $20 for Surrey Camp will be necessary to offset some of the costs.
Participation in the SFU Math Camps is by invitation only. High school teachers who have promissing students should encourage them to fill out an Nomination Form. The application should be received no later than June 4th, 2007. Camp participants will be selected from the nominations received and the successful applicants will be informed through their teacher.
For more information, contact Dr. Malgorzata Dubiel (for Burnaby Camp) or Dr. Natalia Kouzniak (for Surrey Camp).
